A small, dense borough — plan the parking

Islington is one of the smallest and most densely populated boroughs in the country, and effectively all of it is controlled parking. There is no street an engineer can just stop on, so we ask for the address at booking and sort the permit or the bay before the appointment rather than during it.

Clerkenwell and Farringdon — the EC1 end — sit inside the Congestion Charge zone; Angel, Barnsbury, Highbury, Holloway and Archway do not. Either way you pay a flat £15 for travel, agreed before you book, with no road charges added later.

The area covers EC1, N1, N5, N7 and N19. EC1 is also claimed by our City of London area, and where two overlap you are always given the cheaper zone automatically.

Georgian terraces, estates, and converted warehouses

Three kinds of building, three different jobs, all inside one small borough.

The Georgian terraces of Barnsbury and Canonbury are tall and narrow — four floors and one room deep — and heavily protected by conservation designation. A router on the ground floor is two floors and two solid brick ceilings away from the top bedroom. These houses want a wired backhaul between floors, and they are the properties where external routing is most likely to need consent, so it is worth raising before the visit.

A large part of the borough is post-war estate housing, where the constraints are different again: concrete construction, communal risers, and equipment that a leaseholder or tenant cannot reconfigure. Plenty is still fixable inside the flat, but we will tell you on the day which side of that line your problem falls on.

Then there is Clerkenwell, which is largely converted warehouse and studio space. Open plan, exposed brick and steel, and it looks like ideal WiFi territory until you measure it — steel and concrete reflect a signal rather than passing it, so a single unit in a corner produces dead spots in the middle of an open floor. That is also where most of the borough’s small studios and agencies are, and we do fixed-fee managed IT for those as well as one-off repairs.
