Barnet is where we are based

The workshop is in N11, between New Southgate and Friern Barnet. Barnet is the one borough where the engineer coming to you is not travelling in from somewhere else, and it is why there is no call-out fee here: the £15 you pay to book comes off the final bill in full, rather than being a travel charge dressed up as a deposit.

It also means the drop-off option is a real option in Barnet rather than a formality. If the machine is portable and you would rather not wait in for an appointment, bringing it to us costs nothing and skips the visit entirely.

Parking is controlled around the town centres and the stations — Finchley Central, North Finchley, Whetstone, Golders Green and High Barnet — and most residential streets away from those are not. If yours needs a visitor permit, say so when you book and we will sort it out beforehand rather than on the doorstep.

What Barnet houses do to a WiFi signal

Most of the borough is interwar suburban housing: semi-detached, two storeys, built between the wars and extended since. The pattern that follows is so consistent it is almost a rule. The master socket is in the front room, so that is where the router sits, and the room people actually work in is the extension at the back or the loft at the top — the two points furthest from it in the building.

A single router cannot cover that, and a plug-in extender halves the throughput to do it. What works is a mesh node placed on the first floor landing, or a powerline or wired backhaul run to the far end. That is a forty-minute job, not a new broadband contract, and it is worth knowing before you upgrade a package that was never the problem.

Garden rooms are the other Barnet-specific one. A cabin at the end of a sixty-foot garden is outside the reach of anything indoors, through a brick wall and a double-glazed unit. It needs its own access point on a proper link, and it is worth doing once rather than three times.

The exceptions are Colindale and Mill Hill East, which are largely new-build. There the problem inverts: the connection is fast, the router is a developer-supplied box in a hallway cupboard behind a door, and concrete floors between levels stop it dead.
